Starmer strengthens Ukraine support with $2.84 billion loan after Trump clash

In the wake of a tense meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer extended a reassuring hand to Kiev, reaffirming the UK’s “unwavering support” for Ukraine. During Zelensky’s visit to London, Starmer announced a new $2.84 billion loan intended to bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities, a move that comes as European leaders seek to distance themselves from Trump’s skeptical stance on continued Western aid to Kiev.

On February 28, Zelensky’s meeting with Trump at the White House was expected to solidify a minerals agreement beneficial to Ukraine, but it quickly turned into a heated debate over US support for Kiev. Trump, who has long been critical of what he perceives as excessive American generosity toward Ukraine, accused Zelensky of being ungrateful and resistant to negotiating a peaceful resolution to the conflict with Russia.

“We’re looking for peace,” Trump asserted during the tense exchange. “We’re not looking for somebody that’s going to sign up a strong power and then not make peace because they feel emboldened.”

Zelensky, on the other hand, argued that Washington should take a firmer stance against Moscow rather than playing the role of a neutral mediator. The Ukrainian leader’s push for continued, unconditional Western military and financial support seemingly fell flat with Trump, who has consistently voiced skepticism about ongoing US commitments to the war effort. Trump further emphasized that if re-elected in November, he would take a different approach to Ukraine, prioritizing negotiations with Russia rather than indefinitely funding Kiev’s war effort.
