Rob Shaw: Carney delivers three-hour crash course on blindsiding Eby over pipeline
Three and a half hours. That’s how long it took for Premier David Eby to realize he’d been misled by the Prime Minister of Canada on Monday over the status of a new oil pipeline from Alberta to British Columbia’s coast.
The whipsaw happened in record time, even measured by the pace of today’s breakneck news cycle.
It started with Eby and Prime Minister Mark Carney talking on the phone at 10:30 a.m.—their first conversation since news broke last week that Alberta, Saskatchewan and the federal government were in advanced stages of a negotiation for an oil-sands pipeline to B.C.’s north coast.
Eby expressed anger at being cut out of the talks, and said he received reassurances from Carney that any deal, if there even was a deal, was far from done.
“He has outlined to me that the agreement with Alberta is not finalized yet,” Eby told reporters at 12:20 p.m.
Eby wrapped up a news conference in the legislative press theatre at 1 p.m. He barely had time to get back to his desk before CBC News........
