2026 Global Investment Conference: U.S. relying on protectionist foreign policy framework
The U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump’s second term has been defined by economic protectionism and the reapplication of the Monroe Doctrine, said Charles Myers, chairman and founder, Signum Global Advisors, in the opening keynote session at the Canadian Investment Review’s 2026 Global Investment Conference.
“This is the most protectionist U.S. administration in my lifetime.”
While an America-first mentality is fuelling the framework used by Trump to lift economic nationalism or protectionism, he’s also relying on the Monroe Doctrine’s theory that the U.S. has a right to unilaterally dominate the hemisphere, both from an economic and military perspective, as justification to directly intervene in global affairs — like it has done this year in Venezuela when it removed former president Nicolás Maduro from power.
