Sure, bring back hockey to Phoenix ... with 2 conditions
Just nine months after the Arizona Coyotes skated off to Salt Lake City, there’s talk once again about bringing professional hockey back to the desert.
Newly elected Board of Supervisors Chairman Tom Galvin says he plans to convene an advisory group of “visionary leaders” to explore what it would take to bring the National Hockey League back to Arizona.
“Last year, I saw the Coyotes clumsily pursue a state land auction, and there was no leadership or strategy at (a) political level,” Galvin told me. “I felt it was important to fill that void and start a process that’s done the right way with professional deliberation.”
What it would take would seem fairly obvious:
A. A new owner. A decent one this time, someone more committed to building a hockey tradition in Arizona than in building his bank account.
And B. A new owner who can attract private investors to build a private arena.
The Arizona Coyotes were sold off last spring, not even a week after the team’s........
